THERE WAS MAJESTY the night Salome defeated Cynara for the apartment wrestling championship. In defeat, as in victory, Cynara celebrated her legend.    From the first, everyone knew this was a special evening. These two women exhibited a wrestling genius never equalled. Their cool savagery electrified the atmosphere. Every move spoke of cruel calculation. Their strategies revealed a savage brilliance.    Years later, Cynara, now happily married to a leading publisher, recalls the evening.    "I must have thought about it a thousand times," she admits, "and I still can't figure out how I lost. I don't care if it sounds like I'm bragging, but Salome didn't deserve to beat me. She never was the wrestler I was.    "I don't believe in luck, so I won't say she got lucky. Somehow, she managed to twist me so my balance went. By the time I realized what happened, I felt the full weight of her body upon me. I can still feel her crushing down. I can even recall the smell of her. She smelled rancid, like defeat.    "People ask me if I'd ever want to wrestle Salome again. Apartment wrestling is behind me. I have no desire to get back. Still, if Salome challenged me directly, I don't know. I don't know if I could turn away."
