   When the trial finally ended, Jaime sat on a corridor bench outside Courtroom B consolling her client on their loss. The double doors beside them burst open and Deneyve strode briskly into the hallway, glanced both ways, then headed in Jaime's direction.
   Both traffic and conversations stopped as the stunning brunette walked, seemingly in slow motion, her head held high. The designer suit she wore was just short and tight enough to turn heads, without violating proper courtroom decorum.
   "Better luck next time." she
  purred as she glided past a seething Jaime and approached a phalanx of reporters eager to interview the beautiful lawyer.
   The two women had met at law school. Their beauty and intellegence set them apart from the other students, and at each other's throats. Deneyve was a couple of years older than the prodigy, Jaime, which seemed to add to the intensity of their rivalry.
   They competed fiercely for anything and everything: academic honors, athletic awards, even men. Their incessant competitions became legend at the prestigous school.
     After graduating, both women settled in Seattle and began private practice. And renewed their rivalry with even more intensity. Their behavior, exquisite fodder for the local tabloids and talk radio.
   And until recently, their victories had been evenly distributed between them. But of late, Deneyve had been defeating Jaime regularly. No matter how thorough her preparation, how skillful her presentation, how passionate her effort, Jaime lost to her rival again and again. And it ate away at the young attorney.
