THE FEEL OF silk against her skin was soothing. Sarah thought about the coarse sheets in the residential hotel wher she stayed and rejoiced in her good fortune.
When she tired of the sen-sual splendor, the brunette beauty tread slowly toward the picture window; each step was a pleasure as the plush carpet caressed the pads of her feet. Compared to the hard dirt between her parents' house and the barn, this was like walking on air.
Sarah stood before the window, staring at the skyline of Manhattan. It was magni-ficent. On her right was the Empire State Building, its spire bathed in a cool white light. Farther away were the towers of the World Trade Center, looming proud like a pair of warriors. Other buildings, glamorous and rich, were filled with wealthy people doing important things. This night, some of those important people were preparing to see Sarah.
Sarah laughed, realizing these people would be thinking of her with anticipation and excitement. Five months ago, she was engaged to marry a young farmer she'd known all her life. Four months ago, she'd left him a note saying she had enough of farm life. Her parents got a similar note. She got on a train headed east and never looked back.
